De tentoonstelling

De tentoonstelling WaterSchool Cabinet of Curiosities van Studio Makkink & Bey is geïnspireerd op "rariteitenkabinetten". Deze rariteitenkabinetten, voorlopers van de hedendaagse musea, onstonden doordat verzamelaars objecten en artefacten verzamelden uit allerlei artistieke, wetenschappelijke en intellectuele stromingen om ze naast elkaar tentoon te stellen, zonder enige indeling of classificatie. Interactief en hands-on van aard, nodigden deze collecties actief uit tot verwondering terwijl ze tegelijkertijd dienden om een bepaald verhaal te vertellen over de wereld en haar geschiedenis.

De tentoonstelling in het Trippenhuis zet deze traditie voort en presenteert een selectie werken van uitgenodigde kunstenaars en ontwerpers, verenigd in het speculatieve kader van de WaterSchool. Binnen de tentoonstelling dienen deze als conversatiestarters, om discussies op gang te brengen over hoe wonen, leven en werken anders vormgegeven kunnen worden met water als overkoepelend thema.

Ontmoetingen tussen kunstenaars, wetenschappers en ontwerpers

WaterSchool Cabinet of Curiosities vormt van december 2022 tot juli 2023 het decor voor een reeks ontmoetingen tussen kunstenaars, wetenschappers en ontwerpers. Onderwerpen en vragen die centraal staan bij deze ontmoetingen zijn:

• De mens als een wandelend ecosysteem, en de rol van water in het behoud daarvan.
• Landbouw op een industriële schaal en hoe deze om moet en kan gaan met een veranderend klimaat en bodem.
• De onzichtbare watervoetafdruk van ons gedrag en onze omgeving.
• Architectuur als discipline, en hoe het veranderende klimaat het ontwerp van gebouwen kan en zal beïnvloeden.
• De juridische status van oceanen, rivieren en andere waterlichamen.
• De rol van het onderwijs in het leren van verschillende en minder verspillende manieren om met water om te gaan.

Over de WaterSchool

De WaterSchool is een ontwerpend onderzoeksproject van Studio Makkink & Bey waarin zij onderzoeken hoe scholen en hele wijken kunnen worden (her)ontwikkeld om hun ecologische en watervoetafdruk te minimaliseren. De school is hierin het centrum van de wijk en heeft een voorbeeldfunctie door haar leerlingen en de bijbehorende gemeenschap te laten zien en te leren hoe je anders kunt leven met water in het achterhoofd. Zij doet dit door haar leerplan te (her)positioneren door na te denken hoe de vakken die op school worden onderwezen kunnen worden benaderd vanuit of in verband met water. Verder laat het schoolgebouw zowel aan de binnen- als aan de buitenkant zien hoe de gebouwde omgeving kan worden (her)ontwikkeld om de ecologische voetafdruk te minimaliseren. Vanuit de school breidt het onderzoek zich naar buiten uit door te bedenken hoe wonen, leven en werken opnieuw kunnen worden doordacht om hun respectievelijke voetafdruk op de schaal van een wijk te verkleinen.

Opening of WaterSchool Cabinet of Curiosities

From November 2022 onwards, the KNAW and the Akademie van Kunsten i.c.w. Studio Makkink & Bey will organize an exhibition dedicated to water in all its facets. A few rooms of the Trippenhuis will be transformed into a cabinet of curiosities, displaying a wide variety of works by artists and designers.

On Monday 14 November Jurgen Bey, member of the Society of Arts (Akademie van Kunsten), will give an introduction on the WaterSchool and invites the audience for a first visit to the Cabinet of Curiosities.

The exhibition

The WaterSchool exhibition by Studio Makkink & Bey is inspired by “cabinets of curiosities”. Precursors of modern day museums, these cabinets of curiosities arose from collectors gathering objects and artifacts from many strands of artistic, scientific and intellectual endeavor in order to display them side by side ignorant of any categorization or classification. Interactive and hands-on in nature, these collections actively invited exploration and curiosity, whilst simultaneously serving to tell a particular story about the world and its history as imagined by their collector.

Continuing this tradition, the WaterSchool exhibition at the Trippenhuis presents a selection of works by invited artists and designers united within the speculative framework of the WaterSchool. Within the exhibition, these serve as conversation starters, in order to instigate discussions on how dwelling, living and working could be rethought and even redesigned bearing water and its impact in mind.

Discussions with artists, scientists and designers

WaterSchool Cabinet of Curiosities will function as the setting for a series of roundtable discussions with artists, scientists and designers between December 2022 and July 2023.

These discussions will be centered around questions and topics like:

• The human as a wandering ecosystem, and the role of water in maintaining this.
• Agriculture as an industry, and how it is to cope with a changing climate and soil.
• The invisible water footprint of our behavior and surroundings.
• Architecture as a discipline, and how the changing climate can impact the design of buildings.
• The legal status of oceans, rivers and other bodies of water.
• The role of education in teaching different ways of handling water.

About WaterSchool

The WaterSchool is a design research project by Studio Makkink & Bey within which they explore how schools and entire neighbourhoods could be (re)developed to minimize their ecological and water footprint. Herein, the school is the center of the neighbourhood and has an exemplary function, showing and teaching its pupils as well as the associated community how one could live differently bearing water in mind. It does so by (re)positioning its curriculum through thinking how the subjects taught at school could be approached starting from or relating to water. Furthermore the schoolbuilding shows in both its interior and exterior how the built environment could be (re)developed in order to minimize its ecological footprint. From the school, the research extends outwards imagining how dwelling, living and working could be rethought to reduce their respective footprint on the scale of a neighbourhood.
